Proposal:
We appreciate the opportunity of presenting this proposal for your consideration.
We expect to be able to greet you here, in Bahía Blanca, Argentina.
We´ll respond to the requirements in detail below.
A host or hosts willing to manage local arrangements (many colleges and universities are skilled at facilitating conferences)
Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS) will be happy to host the 2009 Code4Lib conference in Bahía Blanca, 420 miles south of Buenos Aires, which means a one-hour flight. Bahía Blanca is the home of Emanuel (Manu) Ginobili, NBA star player for the San Antonio Spurs. Please visit http://argentina.manuginobili.com/
Bahia Blanca is also the home for other 330000 people and an enthusiastic group of software developers focused on libraries.
The University has collected experience in organizing scientific meetings for an international audience. An auditorium with capacity for 350 people and three or more “breakout” rooms for 30-50. The auditorium has availability of facilities of sound, video, multimedia, Internet, simultaneous translation, etc.
Pictures may be examined at http://www.uns.edu.ar/secretarias/cultura/salas.htm
In the case there may be a need for additional rooms and an extra auditorium, it is possible to use the facilities of Asociación Bernardino Rivadavia, home of the Biblioteca Rivadavia, the oldest public library in the Patagonia, and it has wonderful facilities within 80 yards from the main venue. Please, visit http://www.abr.org.ar/
Technology:
Internet connection has a 6 Mb bandwidth and our intranet Works well at 100/1000 Mb. Wireless network service Hill be available.
There is commitment to work with the conference planning group to help keep attendee costs to a minimum.
We can surely compete in cost with most places in the world.
Additional Desirable Qualities
All amenities available. Night venues: approx US$10 and up, good food, excellent wine, excellent shopping, leather goods, day trips to the beach, or to the mountains (a 1 hour bus ride and you are there!) day at a estancia, big beef asado, fish, or your preference of pastas, etc.
Reasonably near a major airport. The major international airport is Ezeiza (EZE) at Buenos Aires. To reach Bahia Blanca, you take (from EZE) a bus service to Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) where you catch a one-hour flight.
Good evening venues (e.g., interesting and/or good restaurants and bars). There is plenty of restaurants, bars, tango and folklore music and dance shows, etc. Prices go from about US$15.- to $40.-. The earliest you can expect a restaurant to start serving is about 8:00 – 8:30 PM.
http://www.welcomeargentina.com/bahiablanca/fotografias.html
There are other amenities about one-hour bus ride from Bahia Blanca, like a beach (Monte Hermoso, http://www.monteweb.com.ar/ ), a small but beautiful mountain range (http://www.sierradelaventana.com/ ), all of them at reasonable prices. A nice day at an estancia, horseback riding, real asado on site, etc. We can make arrangements for whole group or for just a few, or you can help you plan your own.
Other alternatives you may wish to explore are Iguazu http://www.iguazuargentina.com/ , Bariloche http://www.bariloche.com/ , San Juan http://www.turismo.sanjuan.gov.ar/oasis/ischi.html , Calafate http://www.calafate.com/ , Ushuaia (at the end of the continent) http://www.ushuaia.com.ar/ ……. You will never regret it!! Argentina is a great place to visit and enjoy!!!
Some distance away from the last conference site. This requirement is easily achieved, Bahia Blanca is located at about 10000 kilometers (6700 miles) away from Athens, GA.
Hotels and accommodations
Please visit the following hotel web sites. Prices are excellent!!! They range from about US$ 30.- to US$ 80.-
Remember!! 1.00 US$ dollar is about $ 3,15 pesos.
Hotel Argos http://www.hotelargos.com/
Hotel Austral http://www.hoteles-austral.com.ar/indexa.php
There other accommodations available, of course.

Our specific interest in being host for 2009 Code4Lib Conference
Back in May of 2000 we held a conference on the subject of Integrated Library Management Systems. We were lucky to be able to invite specialist and librarians who used ILMS or had the chance to go through the various stages of systems installation and adoption. Our goals then were a) learn how to think about ILMS and b) how to plan for human resources to achieve a).
Young people at the University were enthusiastic about assuming the challenge to develop, test, run and maintain a “piece by piece” approach to an ILMS development. We could not afford a) to buy a commercial ILMS, and most importantly, b) loose the power of having “the best possible control” over our data.
So, Fernando Gomez started an application for cataloging MARC21, using the Open Source paradigm, now running for almost three years in ours and other libraries. Please, refer to http://inmabb.criba.edu.ar/catalis/ . Here is a demo which you can test.
More recently, we started to work with a group from Entre Rios (Argentina) who developed a circulation system, Open MarcoPolo http://marcopolo.uner.edu.ar/ , aiming to the complete integration with a cataloging and an online authorities control system, all of them using web technologies. The development site is at https://sourceforge.net/projects/campi/
Our web site, for the University Library is http://bc.uns.edu.ar
We understand that getting to meet with other programmers will help us understand better the dynamics of collaborative work. Meeting with the Code4Lib people would be an excellent chance to achieve this.
Thank you!!!
Proposal:
We propose that Brown University, located in Providence, Rhode Island,
host the 2009 code4lib conference.
Providence is a beautiful city, with an abundance of historic
architecture, fabulous restaurants, music, theatre, and shopping
within easy walking and trolley distance of the Brown campus and
downtown hotels. In addition to Brown, Providence is home to the Rhode
Island School of Design and Trinity Repertory Company. There is a
vibrant geek community – http://www.providencegeeks.org/
Transportation:
T.F. Green Airport (PVD)
Only ten minutes from downtown Providence, Warwick’s T.F. Green
Airport offers more than 160 direct flights via major carriers. T.F.
Green was named one of the “Top Five Alternative Airports” in the
country by Forbes magazine.
Amtrak
Providence is located on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor between
Washington DC/New York City and Boston.
Via Automobile
Located at the intersection of I-95 and I-195, Providence is 50 miles
from Boston (about a one hour car ride) and 185 miles from New York
City (about three hours by car).
Accommodations & Meeting Space:
Providence has over 35 hotels. The Hilton Providence has just
completed a multi-million dollar renovation. The hotel has 274 rooms,
an indoor pool and health club, free high speed internet, restaurants,
bar, Starbucks. The Hilton has 6020 sq. ft of meeting space; see
capacity charts –
http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/hotels/meeting_space.jhtml?ctyhocn=PVDPRHF.
According to TravelPost.com “prices generally start at $89 per night”
but standard published rates are $169 per night. There are several
other hotels with suitable meeting space including the Westin and the
Biltmore. Other technology conferences held or scheduled to be held
in Providence include ASIS&T (11/2004), Nercomp (3/2008), and Digital
Library Federation Fall Forum (11/2008). The Westin was/is the site
for these conferences. Published rate is $169 per night. The Westin
is directly connected to the Providence Place Mall with 170 stores (an
Apple Store is the newest edition).
Weather in February:
Average Low: 22°
Average High: 39°
Average Precipitation: 3.45 in.

Proposal:
The Southeast Florida Library Information Network would like to host
the Code4lib 2009 conference.
Southeast Florida, spanning Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and
Martin counties, has an abundance of locations which meet all the
criteria for a hosting site. Because it is a wide area, with unique
amenities in each area, we will be able to work with the planning
committee to find the best locale for the lowest price. SEFLIN has
extensive experience hosting workshops and conferences for its member
libraries, and is excited to offer their support facilitating the
Code4lib 2009 conference.
There are three major airports in Southeast Florida: Miami
International, Fort Lauderdale International and Palm Beach
International. The Florida Tri-Rail commuter train offers service to
all three airports.
Additional amenities in Southeast Florida depend on how much you want
to do, and how much time you have. There is the Atlantic Ocean and
some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with reefs for
snorkeling, scuba diving, or fishing. There are two national wildlife
refuges in the area, as well as many natural preserves with hiking and
biking trails. There are also abundant places to canoe or kayak. In
addition, there are numerous concert venues, museums, and live
theaters, well as an ever expanding list of restaurants and bars, many
with live entertainment (jazz is a particular favorite here). For
baseball fans, the end of February marks the beginning of Spring
training, with the St. Louis Cardinals and Florida Marlins training in
Jupiter, Florida, and the New York Mets training in Port St. Lucie
(one hour north of Jupiter).
One final qualification: Southeast Florida is not only on a different
coast from this year’s conference, it is about as far away from
Code4lib 2008 as you can get and still be on the same continent. :)
Please contact me if you have any questions.
